APA 100 BestAPA 100 BestAPA 100 BestThe America’s Promise Alliance along with Capital One announced the winners of the 3rd annual 100 Best Communities for Young People competition which spotlights U.S. cities and towns that have made the well-being of children and youth a top priority.  These communities are identified as having effective ways to ensure their young people have resources available to help them stay in school and succeed in graduating high school.  All applicants had to include information on how their existing programs and initiatives help deliver the Five Promises—resources identified by the Alliance as necessary to lead successful, healthy and productive lives and build a stronger society.  “The Alliance believes the success of our children is grounded in experiencing the Five Promises – caring adults; safe place; a healthy start; an effective education; and opportunities to help others – at home, in school and in the community.”

The City of Plantation, Florida made the 100 Best list for the first time in 2008.  What can we attribute this to?  In Plantation, Florida, the Plantation Junior Woman’s Club (PJWC) works with city departments to fund children’s services and programs.  Additional events such as “Art in the Park” and “Holiday Tour of Homes” greatly benefit the fire department’s Care-A-Little program.  “Dress for Success” provides professional resume development and clothing for graduates preparing for job interviews.  The “4Kids of South Florida” creates safe houses for victims of neglect and abuse.  As a winner of the 2008 “100 Best Communities for Young People” competition, the City of Plantation is eligible to apply for $300,000 in grant funds from the America’s Promise Alliance.
